The meaning of "medallion" has migrated from "a piece of metal, usually
carved or engraved" originally to "the large enclosed portion of a
design" in the recent history. Medallion in the architectural sense
means inlayed patterns comprising multiple segments and colors. Medallions can
be made in a variety of materials such as plastic, wood and stone, among which
stone medallions have become major elements in modern construction designs. Stone,
particularly marble medallions have a wide range of applications, such as
flooring, wall covering, pool decorations as well as religious applications.
These applications can be traced back many centuries, ancient Roman and Greek
medallions had to certain extent set basic guidelines even for modern
medallion designs.
In general, two types of stone medallions are available, i.e., waterjet cut
and hand cut. Costs of waterjet medallions are significantly higher than hand
cut ones as certain amount of diamond sands have to be consumed in the
waterjet cutting process. However, waterjet cuts are extremely precise,
providing effective means for shaping irregular small stone pieces in
complicated medallions that are impossible to be made with hand cut.
